Breed Standard Colours
The breed standards describe the cat as pointed (dark face, ears, tail, and
paws) with blue eyes, a Roman nose, even gloves (white front paws) and
laces (back paws with an inverted “V” of white up the hocks). The
Birman has a semi-long haired coat. Uniquely, the Birman’s coat will
not matt. When a kitten, the coat is soft like down. As the Birman
matures, the coat gets a silky texture. Birmans normally have a ruff
around the neck. They are a medium-sized cat; females are around
9-10 lbs. and males up to 15 lbs. It takes about two years for
the male to fully develop.
Solid colours
are Seal Point, Blue Point, Chocolate Point, Lilac Point, Red Point,
and Cream Point. Any of these colours with Tabby markings are
called Lynx Point, such as Seal Lynx Point, Red Lynx Point, etc.
With Tortoiseshell markings, they are called Tortie Point, such as Blue
Tortie Point, Lilac Tortie Point, etc. With both Tabby and
Tortoiseshell markings, they are called Torbie Point, such as Chocolate
Torbie Point. There are some other variations such as Silver and
Cinnamon, they just aren't as common..
The temperament
of a Birman is well adjusted. They love to be around people and
will greet you at the door when you get home. Birmans can learn
how to fetch and are easily trained to be on a harness. They are
great with kids and dogs. As with any cat, each has its own
personality; however, to a Birman it’s all about pleasing its owner.
They will rip around and play with each other one minute and cuddle
with you another. Over all, the Birman is a great companion
